The historic Sturdevant House in Waverly has a new board of directors and is making progress on recovery from the floods of 2008. Preservation Iowa has been helping descendents of Ira and Asenath Sturdevant preserve this historic home for generations to come. On May 26, a board of directors was formed to continue the work already underway and to gain 501(c)3 nonprofit status for the project.
To date, the flooded cellar has been cleaned and aired out and stabilization has begun, including removal of the hot tub, reconnecting the electricity, rebuilding the fence gate, and beginning work on the masonry walls. Future work will include repointing the masonry, painting exterior trim, and rehabilitating the interior. Much of the stabiliazation is financed in part by grant from the State Historical Society of Iowa, but the local group could use your help.
If you would like to donate time or services to the effort, contact Kathy Sturdevant at (719) 238-8329 or at Katherine.Sturdevant@ppcc.edu. Donations may be sent to the Ira Sturdevant House c/o Preservation Iowa at P.O. Box 814, Mt. Pleasant, IA 52641.
