A birthday party for the Secrest 1883 Octagonal Barn drew between 300 and 400 people on October 5 and 6. Rich Tyler has been restoring the barn since 1992. It is unique for its octagonal shape and bell-shaped roof. Assistance in the restoration has come from the State Historical Society of Iowa, Friends of Historic Preservation, Upward Bound, and Phi Kappa Nu. Birthday events included period farm equipment demonstrations, a tour of the barn, a potluck picnic, and two 1900-pound Belgian workhorses hoisting hay into the barn.
