Halloween Blaze Claims Historic Building in Riceville

Riceville Theater and Opera House Damaged Beyond Repair

A blaze begun some time before 11pm Halloween night may have claimed the historic Riceville Theater and Opera House. Two business were destroyed in the fire, which took over 12 hours to extinguish. Nine fire departments assisted, depleting the town’s water tower and resorting to pumping water out of nearby Lake Hendricks. Riceville Fire Chief Lyle Eastman estimated 150 firefighters battled the fire. Eastman also indicated that the historic building will need to be demolished. The cause of the fire is not known.
