The Palace Theatre opened in 1915 showing silent films. Fast-foward nearly a century and it is joining the digital era by showing 3-D films, beginning with Shrek Forever After on July 1, to be followed by Toy Story 3 and The Karate Kid. Jumping into the 21st century is one way for small-town historic theaters to compete with multiplexes in nearby cities. The Palace has become a magnet for downtown Vinton and is also used conventional community theater.
