A few miles north of Keokuk, a historic site is slowly being reclaimed by Mother Nature. According to the current owner, Dan Hodges, the ground once held over 100 buildings–all belonging to a former blasting powder factory built by the DuPont Company in the 1880s. The black powder manufactured there was used in the mining industry. Although DuPont destroyed more than half the buildings when they left and some have fallen victim to arson, many have simply deteriorated over time. Hodges hopes to preserve what remains as a site with historic ruins telling the story of the factory, the 200-plus employees who worked there, and 60 years of industrial history.
