Spring storms passing through Iowa Sunday night and Monday morning (May 25 and 26) brought lightning that likely sparked a fire at Mount Vernon’s First Presbyterian Church. The fire destroyed the bell tower and damaged the attic, while firefighting and continued rain contributed to water damage. Crews from surrounding communities helped put out the flames. First Presbyterian Church is in the process of planning an addition; the expansion project will now include rebuilding the steeple.
