Charles City Suspension Bridge Removed from River

Historic Bridge’s Fate Still Uncertain

After a failed attempt to remove the historic Charles City Suspension Bridge from the Cedar River on June 20, the River finally gave up the bridge Thursday, July 24. The recovery effort was delayed in part due to waiting for the ground along the river to dry out enough to support the heavy equipment needed to lift the bridge. Peterson Contractors Inc. of Reinbeck and Marzen’s Towing and Recovery worked together for over four hours to remove the pieces as carefully as possible. While the community would like to see the bridge rebuilt, it is not yet known whether the historic fabric can be reused.
