Lyle and Gwen Brown have no plans for getting into property management, but they couldn’t stand by and watch two downtown historic buildings demolished. After months of trying to find a way to save the buildings on Avenue G, the Fort Madison City Council had given up and planned to tear them down. Local historic preservationists tried to convince the council otherwise, pointing out how important rehabilitation of historic buildings can be to future grants and economic development programs, such as the Main Street Iowa program. On Tuesday night, January 20th, the council voted unanimously to give the buildings to the Browns, who will need to re-roof the buildings, clean them out, and eliminate a mold problem. The buildings are part of the commercial historic district, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
