Community Presentation by local Architect
Architectural Styles of Cedar Falls Homes
The Cedar Falls Historic Preservation Commission has announced that it will host two free public presentations by local architect and commission member Daryl Andersen on Thursday, January 19 and Thursday, January 26. Both evenings will take place from 6:30 – 8 p.m. at the Cedar Falls Community Center, 6th and Main Street, Cedar Falls. Andersen will show photos of Cedar Falls homes and discuss their architectural features and styles.
The presentations are an outgrowth of Andersen’s work on the Historic Preservation Commission. Since the Commission was formed by City Ordnance in February, 2011, the five commission members have completed the city’s Certified Local Government application to the State of Iowa and National Park Service, a requirement of which is a survey of historic properties in the community. Properties may be considered historic because of their significant architecture, because of the significance of someone who lived or worked there, or because of what happened at that property or site. Mr. Andersen has focused his survey to date primarily on the architectural features and styles of Cedar Falls homes and places of worship.
Andersen’s January 19th presentation will begin with the community’s oldest homes and will wind up with Victorian era homes, depending on the amount of audience-speaker interaction. The January 26th presentation will begin where the first presentation leaves off and will continue at least through homes built in the 1940s. Mr. Andersen will also include the architecture of local places of worship in his presentation. The public may attend either or both presentations.
Cynthia Sweet, chair of the Cedar Falls Historic Preservation Commission, commented “By systematically inventorying and identifying architecturally significant properties in Cedar Falls Daryl Andersen has created a very important resource for our Commission and the entire community. On top of that, he has generously given of his time and expertise to put the information into a format which he can present to the community. With the information and the photographic examples that Daryl has compiled to share with us, all property owners will be better equipped to identify the style, date, and significant features of their property. In addition to the handouts that will be available at the presentations, the Commission hopes to make Daryl’s presentation available in a more detailed printed format at a later date, because we know it will be a valuable reference resource not only for our community but for many other communities who many not have access to someone with Mr. Andersen’s expertise.”
The public is invited to attend either or both of the presentations on January 19 and 26th from 6:30 – 8 p.m. at the Cedar Falls Community Center. The events are free and open to the public.
