On Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 9pm Central Time the Learning Channel will broadcast the world premier of the Heavy Haulers program featuring the moving of the Buchanan House in Central Iowa this last summer.

The Buchanan House (1883) was relocated from its original location south of Mechanicsville 8.5 miles to its new location at the site of a newly developing winery. The house will serve as a bed and breakfast for the new winery. The complex move was accomplished in two days without a hitch. The family that saved the house is being acknowledged as heroes in the historic preservation community. The house was originally slated for demolition by the previous owner.

The Iowa based moving company, Jeremy Patterson House Movers, Inc. accomplished the record +400 ton lift and move utilizing multipoint jacking systems and self propelled dollies. The brick home did not suffer and cracks or loss of bricks during its two day excursion.

The Iowa Historic Preservation Alliance is grateful to all who were involved with this project. We usually encourage historic structures be saved and reutilized at their original site, but when faced with demolition we acknowledge the advantages of structure relocation for reuse.
