On April 26, the congregation of the First United Methodist Church in Burlington voted to reconstruct their church on its downtown site rather than build a new structure at the edge of town. The church, which is in the Heritage Hill National Register Historic District, was burned down by an arsonist on April 29, 2007. Along with rebuilding, the church will purchase the adjacent four story commercial building (in the West Jefferson National Register Historic District) for adaptive reuse as office and programming space.
