The federal historic tax credit has made a huge impact in Iowa. For more than 30 years, properties around the state have been reenergized using this incentive. Since the creation of the state historic tax credit program over a decade ago, the impact has grown exponentially. In many cases, the only way to save a historic building is to use these programs. In addition, the rehabilitation made possible by the tax credits has created jobs and leveraged local, private investment.
Despite this success, the federal historic tax credit program is in danger. Deficit reductions could eliminate one of the primary federal programs being used to rehabilitate historic properties!
