A large school building built in the 1920s has been saved from demolition by the citizens of Shelby. The School District plans to sell the building to the City of Shelby for $1 and the City has agreed to resell the building for $2 to a community organization, the Grandparents Gifts Foundation. The building, likely eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, may become a museum, office space, community hall, or a venue for reunions and wedding receptions. Fundraising has already begun to raise money for roof repairs that might cost $100,000.
